Guide: How to Shield Yourself From Risk When Planning Actions on Campus
/Preparing for an action on campus? Use this guide to assess your risk and prepare to fight back!
Over the past two years, students have organized in unprecedented numbers to stand in solidarity with Palestine. However, instead of listening to students’ demands for institutions to end their complicity in genocide, universities are taking increasingly punitive measures to punish their students for using their voices.
This guide has important resources from Palestine Legal and trusted partners to ensure you can protect yourself and others, and reduce harm from repression.
Students are facing unprecedented repression and need principled support. Palestine Legal stands with these students bravely using their voices to demand an end to their universities’ complicity in Israel’s ongoing genocide.
Know Your Risks:
Familiarize yourself with the applicable rules that might apply to your campus actions.
Check your student handbook for the school's code of conduct and free expression policies so you know what risks you might face and can make informed decisions about taking them on or trying to navigate around them.

Understand which students are most vulnerable:
Students on visas or low-income students are often hit hardest by suspensions or campus bans.
Students who are graduating soon might face delays if they are caught up in campus disciplinary proceedings.
Students who have already received disciplinary charges might face more severe punishments.
Plan Ahead:
Plan for safety and security, including possible arrest.
Have a media plan to publicize your action (and any repression), call on allies for solidarity, have de-escalation plans, etc.
Develop a backup plan.
If students lose access to housing/dining, where will they get support? Allied alumni, faculty, and community orgs can be key partners in building a safety net. Having a relationship in advance can make it easier to call on them when you need help.
Prevent Doxxing:
Doxxing is easier to prevent than it is to deal with after it happens. Check out the Equality Labs Anti-Doxing Guide for Activists for proactive steps to reduce the risks you face, especially if you are a campus leader.
