The Palestine Legal team is deeply saddened by Michael’s passing.  His influence on our work is unparalleled.  It is no exaggeration to say that Palestine Legal exists because of Michael.  His prescient recognition of the growing need for a legal response to the intense backlash against advocates for Palestinian rights in the US led to the founding of Palestine Legal.

Palestine Legal, the Center for Constitutional Rights and the National Lawyers Guild, Massachusetts Chapter wrote Boston University (BU) today demanding that the university apologize to nine students who were removed from a BU Hillel event and issue a statement to the campus community affirming that all students are welcome at open campus events, including Palestinian-American students, Muslim students and students active with Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP).

Civil rights attorneys are concerned about the disciplinary charges issued Wednesday against two Brooklyn College students for their participation in a ‘mic check’ during a February 16 faculty meeting. The students were part of an ad hoc group of students who were raising concerns about issues ranging from tuition to diversity and surveillance. Palestine Legal and the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) are representing Sarah Aly and Thomas DeAngelis, two students charged with violating Rules 1, 2, 3, and 7 of the City University of New York’s (CUNY) code of conduct, or the Henderson Rules.

Today, Palestine Legal and the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) sent copies of their report, “The Palestine Exception to Free Speech: A Movement Under Attack in the US,” to one hundred lawmakers in five states currently considering legislation aimed at punishing, suppressing, and chilling Palestinian human rights advocacy, including through the creation of McCarthyist blacklists of companies, organizations, and in some cases, individuals, who advocate for Palestinian rights. The report, which documents a pattern of suppression that targets protected speech in favor of Palestinian rights, is available online here.
